The Ayurvedic Art of Eating: How to Make Every Meal Your Medicine

Share :

Food (Ahara) is the source of our life force and serves as more than just a means of supplying nourishment. Every meal has an impact on our emotions, thoughts, and behaviours.  But the real question is how we can make our everyday food nourishing, healing, and still delicious.

 The way of eating
Ayurveda encourages light, warm, freshly cooked and moderate meals, food that supports Agni (digestive fire) and keeps the body balanced.

Principles:

Eat meals that are freshly prepared, not reheated or leftover.
Prefer warm food, it supports digestion better than cold salads or refrigerated meals.

3.      Include a small amount of ghee or healthy oils, it helps the tissues and supports nerve health.
Eat in moderate quantity either too much or too little, leave some space in your stomach after a meal.
Mid-day meal should be your largest; digestion is strongest when the sun is high.

 Simple Recipes:

Moong dal khichdi: This bowl of dal kichdi combines rice, lentils and vegetables, and small amount of ghee. This meal rich in protein and fiber

Vegetable ragi soup: This soup made with Ragi and different types of vegetables, Ragi helps strengthen bones, and adding mild spices like pepper and cumin enhance digestion.

Mindful Eating

1.      Sit calmly, avoid screens or arguments while eating.
Eat with gratitude and awareness.
Finish your meal before you feel completely full.

Food prepared with love and eaten mindfully acts as medicine. When eaten carelessly, even the healthiest meal becomes poison.
